NFBN History

Neighbors for Better Neighborhoods (NBN) began in 1991 as a program of the Winston-Salem Foundation to promote grant making to low-income neighborhoods in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County. Modeled after the Mott Foundation's Neighborhood Grant Making Program, NBN was established to provide technical assistance and small grants to neighborhood associations working to improve the quality of life where they live.

Today Neighbors for Better Neighborhoods (NBN) is an incorporated supporting organization of the Winston-Salem Foundation and is governed by a volunteer board of directors. NBN receives financial support from the Winston-Salem Foundation, the City of Winston-Salem, Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, and from individual and community contributions. NBN staff includes executive director Tamieka A.White, program officer Demeca Washington, community organizer Lesbia Castillo and translator, Freddie Gonzalez.
